10 year old server still going strong

Amazingly, a 10 year old server is working very well. A bunch of hardware needed to be upgraded over the years (hard drive and recently the network card), but it still is running very well. It has Fedora 6 on it.

Miller XMT 300 CC/CV repair

I just finished replacing

the V/A display switch, it was more pain than I expected since it had

to be desoldered from a circuit board. The V/A display now works

beautifully. I have cleaned this welder, vacuumed it, blew the dust

out with compressed air (it had to be seen to be believed, it was

really bad), and now it is in tip top shape.

Powered up a laptop without stock power supply

I connected the Fujitsu laptop to another power supply. The other one

is a bigger and much more expensive power supply from Fermilab called

HP 6267B. It gives a much better, more stable output than the one I used originally.

Debian is great, but a little bit behind

Debian Linux is the foremost example of Linux stability, but, unfortunately, by now Debian etch is a little behind the times and does not recognize some controllers. Also it has an old version of Libc.

Thanksgiving

We had a great thanksgiving, with the family of our close friends. It is nice to have a laptop that would connect to any network!

Many problems with Fedora 8

I tried installing Fedora 8 on three machines, and everywhere I had one problem or another. For example, upgrade of Fedora 7 to Fedora 8 hangs when anaconda says "resolving dependencies". This is really obnoxious and I wonder just what did those guys test.
