We had a great thanksgiving, with the family of our close friends. It is nice to have a laptop that would connect to any network!

Many problems with Fedora 8

I tried installing Fedora 8 on three machines, and everywhere I had one problem or another. For example, upgrade of Fedora 7 to Fedora 8 hangs when anaconda says "resolving dependencies". This is really obnoxious and I wonder just what did those guys test.

Free vs. proprietary software design considerations

Most design considerations for proprietary software are driven by wanting to keep customers locked into the software and to keep them needing more and more extra features.

With free software, the features that are most asked for, usually make it in the product.

Train crashed into a trailer today

A train accident happened on my rail line. What happened was that a train crashed into a trailer. What makes this remarkable is that the trailer, hooked up to a pickup truck, was unusually long and was struck aft.

I think that this occurred due to a novice driver who entered the crossing, without verifying that he had enough space to move through it with his unusually long rig.

Fedora 8 you/livna issue

Fedora 8 had problems with updating itself because yum failed due to incorrect dependencies between madwifi and kernel version.

The solution here was to remove the livna RPM, madwifi and nvidia drivers, and to update Fedora alone.

Then I reinstalled everything. It worked fine.
